2009 Pope Valley Winery Sangiovese Bella Rosa, Napa Valley, CA, $11 (S) – Rating 88

A very enjoyable Sangiovese Rosé.  Deep translucent ruby color with flavors of ripe strawberry, rhubarb with a hint of cola and spice. Just yummy on a warm summer evening. Big enough to pair with grilled chicken or salmon. This offering by Pope Valley Winery just goes to show how versatile and interesting American Sangiovese can be.

2009 Treana White Wine, Santa Lucia Highlands – Mer Soleil Vineyard, Paso Robles, CA, $23 (S) – Rating 90

This rich and weighty Rhone blend of Viognier and Marsanne offers up a complex blend of flavors including white peach, honeydew, lemon crème, apricot with a bit of honey and minerality. Crisp acidity adds to the balance. While oak ageing imparts a touch of vanilla and roundness, it is subtle and well integrated. Treana White sits sur lie for nine months adding depth and character. An excellent food wine.

2008 J Vineyards Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, CA, $35(S) – Rating 89

This medium-bodied Pinot Noir by J Vineyards  has a gentle elegance about it. Well balanced and layered flavors of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, cola with a touch of caramel and cinnamon spice meld together with delicate oak and soft tannins to create a beautiful Pinot that is easy on the palate. Pair this Pinot with grilled chicken or better yet, a grilled cedar-plank salmon.

We sent our wine pooch, Bonny the Cavalier, out in search of a new “Go-To” Chardonnay and she came back with a beauty. The Loyal Companion Chardonnay from Cru Vin Dogs in Sonoma County. At $11, this playful pup will keep you smiling and fetching more. Well integrated flavors of pear, honeycomb, white peach, spice and citrus with a creamy vanilla finish. Serve at your next outdoor event or with lighter summer fare. Proceeds go to benefit local animal shelters and other dog-related charities. Bonny approves!

2010 Van Duzer Estate Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley, Oregon, $16 (S) – Rating 88

The 2010 Van Duzer Pinot Gris is a zippy dry wine with nice round flavors of pear, honeysuckle, apple and white fruit. A touch of ripe pineapple citrus rounds out the flavors of this beauty. As super patio sipper that will sure to be a crowd pleaser. Pair with grilled white fish, shell fish or a summer salad topped with poppy seed dressing.
