2007 Yorba Tempranillo, Shake Ridge Vineyards, Amador County, CA, $38 (S) – Rating 91

Yorba Wines has created a beautiful American-style Rioja (Tempranillo). Plenty of dark red fruit, raspberry, blackberry, plums, etc. A touch of chocolate and spice with soft tannins add depth and structure. Blending with 5% Graciano provides a splash of acidity and brightness.

Wine BlogThe drive from Calistoga to Volker Eisele Family Estate in Chiles Valley (a sub-ava of Napa Valley ava) is a 30 minute climb along a scenic winding two-lane road. As I drove I wondered why anyone would choose to grow grapes in this upper valley. I later learned that Francis Sievers founded Lomita Vineyards in 1870 on the same plot where Volker Eisele planted his predominately Cabernet vineyards a hundred years later. I was greeted at the old Lomita winery building, which now serves as the offices and a museum of sorts, by Volker Eisele himself. His German accent is still pronounced, giving the whole experience an old world feel. Being something of a Napa history buff, I was excited to meet this iconic pioneer vintner. Chatom Vineyards has created a rich Syrah without being overpowering. Flavors of dark cherry and black berries, a little smoke, oak and spice, balanced with soft tannins and a touch of earthy minerality. Consider as an alternative to a BBQ Zinfandel or just enjoy it by itself.

Whistling Dog Cellars continues to offer high value artistic wines at a reasonable price. Truly delicious with rich flavors of dark cherry and blueberry with hints of oaky toast, spice and leathery smoke. Well balanced soft tannins add to the beauty.
