An easy drinking Pinot Noir at a very good price. Medium-full bodied with a nose of blueberry, raspberry and spice box. Well-balanced palette of flavors offering dark cherry, raspberry, ripe plum, and blueberry with a good dose of spiciness and acidity. Notes of leather and smoke on the finish add complexity. 2006 Smith-Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate Bottled, Spring Mountain District, Napa Valley, CA,  $45 (S) – Rating 92

Certainly one of the better Napa Cabernets under $50. The wine opens with a rich textured nose of cherry and ripe plum with notes of cedar and leather. A round mouth-feel offering up flavors of cherry, dark fruit, cocoa and plenty of dark spice. Nice Cabernet complexity enhanced by balanced acidity and supple tannins. Decant 30-60 minutes. Let the Wine Country birthday celebration begin!

In 1960, John Steinbeck set out to reconnect with America accompanied by one companion, an “intuitive” standard poodle named Charley. The tale was recounted in the now classic book “Travels with Charley.” Steinbeck met the idea of the expedition with both excitement and trepidation. In July of 2012, I set out with my daughter, Whitney, to reconnect with the teenager turned young woman who had so matured, since leaving home for college three years earlier. My stated objectives were to celebrate her 21st birthday and introduce Whitney to the wonders of wine country. This father/daughter excursion was one I met, much like Steinbeck, with both excitement and trepidation. Continue reading »

A beautifully lush, rich Pinot Noir with a nose of ripe dark fruit, blueberries, earthiness with notes of espresso. The rich mouth-feel is complimented by flavors of blueberry, ripe raspberries, plum, other dark fruit and companion spices. Balanced acidity and supple tannins add to the complexity. Buy This Wine
