2009 Treana White Wine, Santa Lucia Highlands – Mer Soleil Vineyard, Paso Robles, CA, $23 (S) – Rating 90

This rich and weighty Rhone blend of Viognier and Marsanne offers up a complex blend of flavors including white peach, honeydew, lemon crème, apricot with a bit of honey and minerality. Crisp acidity adds to the balance. While oak ageing imparts a touch of vanilla and roundness, it is subtle and well integrated. Treana White sits sur lie for nine months adding depth and character. An excellent food wine.

2009 Sequana Pinot Noir Dutton Ranch, Green Valley of Russian River Valley, CA $40 (S) – Rating 95

If a Pinot Noir could be described beautifully buxom and voluptuous, Sequana Dutton Ranch fits the bill. This is a fruit forward and full-bodied Pinot that commands your attention. The nuanced flavors of spice, leather, oak and smoke within the bigger flavors of bing cherry, blueberry, and raspberry make for a simply delicious Pinot experience.

The name says it all! If  this  big bad wine  from Grey Wolf Cellars doesn’t blow your house down, may just blow away your palate. Very rich with dark berry jammy zinfulness, this blend has 5% Petite Sirah to add a little zip and spice. Flavors of blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, pepper with a touch of dark chocolate combine with round tannins for a beautiful big Zin.

2008 Tudal Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate Vineyard, Napa Valley, CA $45 (S) – Rating 92

This beautiful Estate Cabernet by Tudal tastes more like a $75 bottle of wine. 35 year-old vines produce a superbly balanced, rich and complex Cabernet. Supple tannins with flavors of blackberry, red fruit, black fruit, smoke, cedar, a hint of cocoa and a spark of acidity come together to put pleasure on your palate. Be patient. This wine is a youngster with enough backbone to improve over the next 3-4 years.

2010 Cass Winery Viognier, Estate Grown, Paso Robles, CA, $26 – Rating 91

On a recent wine excursion to Paso Robles we found Cass Winery and we were glad we did. Cass has created a lovely expression of Viognier from estate fruit. Refreshing, with a creamy round mouth-feel and integrated flavors of white peach, apple, tropicals and a hint of honeycomb. The finish includes a touch of minerality and acidity that  entices the palate.
