2008 Clark-Claudon Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate Grown, Napa Valley, CA, $80 (S) – Rating 94

Just an excellent Cabernet from Clark-Claudon Vineyards and the winemaking team of Frederic Delivert and Jean Hoefliger (Alpha Omega Winery). A medium-bodied and elegant Howell Mountain wine from a tough growing year where a late spring frost claimed 50% of the fruit. The wine opens with a rich nose of black cherry enhanced with notes of cedar. The palate is caressed with black cherry, blackberry, cedar and ripe plum supported by integrated tannins and food friendly acidity. Give this lovely a couple of hours to fully express her depth as the notes of cedar give way to softer flavors of chocolate, espresso and cigar box.

A nice nose of cherry and  plum with a bit of spice. This Pinot from Amici Cellars offers dark cherry jam flavors, ripe plum, saddle leather and spice box with medium acidity and soft tannins. Dijon #777 Pinot Noir clone adds intriguing rustic notes and earthy flavors.

2009 MacPhail Family Winery Ferrington Vineyard Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley, CA, $49 (S) – Rating 94

The lush rich Pinot Noir style that defines James MacPhail wines is showcased here with a full bouquet of cherry, raspberry and spice. On the palate, expect bold yet balanced flavors of cherry and raspberry jam with plenty of spice and notes of oaky vanilla. While rich, integrated acidity adds complexity.  Patience is rewarded as the wine blossoms in the glass.

2009 Story Winery Sangiovese, California Shenandoah Valley, $19 (S) – Rating 90

This Sangiovese from Story Winery really ticked my palate. Opening with bright nose of spicy cherry pie, the wine sports full-fruit flavors of red cherry, strawberry and red berries with notes of plum, spice and espresso. The round mouth-feel is complimented by supple tannins and enough zippy acidity to pair beautifully with the pepper-spiced steak and grilled salad we served.
