2003 Rombauer Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA $90 – Rating 95

One of Rombauer’s small production (400 cases) single vineyard AVA Cabernets. Extremely approachable now and drinking beautifully after a short decant. This is a truly elegant, well balanced wine with a very supple and velvety tannin structure. Lot of dark fruit and berry flavors accented with a touch of toffee and hint of pepper. The wine paired very well with the roast we served. However,  it is big enough to command your attention by itself. Available only at the Rombauer Vineyards tasting room or online at Rombauer.com.

2007 Uppercut Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA, $22 – Rating 90

Uppercut Cabernet is more often found on steakhouse wine list (over priced) than in your local wine shop (great value price). However, we did find it recently at our local shop. At $20-$25 this is a must buy Cabernet! The alcohol is a bit hot when opened but settles down into a well balanced Cabernet after a bit of decanting. The flavors of dark berries, dark cherry, currant and spicy pepper pair wonderfully with  with a grilled steak or lamb chops.

2009 Wine Guerrilla Harris – Kratka Vineyard Zinfandel, Alexander Valley, CA, $30 (S) – Rating 90

This jammy bright zin has plenty of blackberry, spice, cinamon and a touch of smoke and leather. The fruit and tannis are well integrated creating a soft and lush mouth-feel. Towards the back palate you sense a bit of dark cherry and earthiness. This full-bodied Wine Guerrilla Zin has enough of the “right stuff” to last a few years but is ready now after a bit of decanting.

2009 Wine Guerrilla Conte Vinyard Zinfandel, Russian River Valley, CA, $30 (S) – Rating 91

If your looking for a powerful, rugged, fruity & spicy Zin, Wine Guerrilla Conte Vineyard Zinfandel, is an excellent choice.   A truly enjoyable cold night fireside wine. This field blend wine of 83% Zin, 12% Petite Sirah, 2% Alacante and 1% Grenache has texture and complexity. The Petite Sirah added the pepper and leather we loved in this wine.

2007 Stoller SV Estate Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, OR, $40 (S) – Rating 93

Ok… Now we’re talking. This is what Oregon Pinot is all about. From Stoller Vineyards Estate  Senior Vines (older vines) this complex balanced Pinot Noir has a savory intensity that grabs your attention. Rich flavors of spice, dark berry, cherries and coffee with a hint pepper add to the experience. The silky and supple tannins compliment the fruit and will allow this wine to mature for years to come.
