2011 Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc + Viognier, California, $14 (S) – Rating 90

Each year a favorite go-to summer sipper at a great price. 79% Chenin Blanc provides crisp acidity while 21% Viognier adds structure and depth. Opens with a nose of lemon creme pie combined with flavors of pineapple, tropicals, Meyer lemon, stone fruit, light spice, floral herbal notes and a hint of flintiness with a touch of sweetness. Try with spicy Thai food.

2009 Lava Cap Reserve Viognier. El Dorado, CA, $30 (S) – Rating 90

An excellent example of California Viognier from Lava Cap Winery and a wonderful Chardonnay alternative. Rich flavors of ripe pineapple, honeysuckle, vanilla and peach enhanced by a touch of crême brulée and minerality. A bit of zippy acidity adds complexity and makes for better food pairing.

2010 Illahe Viognier, Oregon, $16 – Rating 91

A beautiful example of Oregon Viognier from Illahe Vineyards. Round flavors of ripe pineapple, honeydew melon, and citrus with hints of peach. An aromatic nose and soft acidity add to the complexity. Viognier is a great alternative to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. It pairs very well with summer meals and grilled white meats.

2010 Cass Winery Viognier, Estate Grown, Paso Robles, CA, $26 – Rating 91

On a recent wine excursion to Paso Robles we found Cass Winery and we were glad we did. Cass has created a lovely expression of Viognier from estate fruit. Refreshing, with a creamy round mouth-feel and integrated flavors of white peach, apple, tropicals and a hint of honeycomb. The finish includes a touch of minerality and acidity that  entices the palate.

2010 McPherson Cellars Viognier, Texas, $14 – Rating 90

Year after year McPherson Cellars creates one of the best Texas Viogniers, if not one of the best in the U.S. A  fruit forward dry wine with well integrated flavors of peach, honeydew, tropical fruits with a hint of apple and enough acidity to for perfect food pairing. We love this wine with shellfish, grilled white fish and especially Thai food.
