2011 Mer Soleil Silver Unoaked Chardonnay, Santa Lucia Highlands, CA, $21 (S) – Rating 93

The blending of grapes aged in both stainless steel and concrete tanks creates an excellent expression of Chardonnay, crisp without sharp edges. The nose hints of tropicals, red apples and creamy pineapple. Food pairing acidity is balanced with a creamy mouth-feel combined with flavors of red apple, baked pears and citrus with notes of minerality on the long finish. One of our favorite 2011 Chardonnays. Always a favorite in the Pinot Gris category. Equally good as a refreshing sipper or pairing with lighter fare. 2012 Hawley Winery Viognier, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County, CA, $27 – Rating 91

Hawley is a consistent producer of high quality Viognier. The flavor profile of this white wine usually sits somewhere between Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Hawley’s Viognier is fermented in neutral oak barrels giving it a softer mouth-feel with balanced acidity. A zesty nose of citrus and tropicals with flavors of citrus, white peach, minerality and the softest hint of honeycomb as it opens. A wonderful alternative to the more common whites. Buy This Wine
