2012 J Vineyards & Winery Pinot Gris, CA, $15 (S) – Rating 91

Always a favorite in the Pinot Gris category. Equally good as a refreshing sipper or pairing with lighter fare. Aged in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, it offers aromas of citrus, orange peel and honeysuckle with hints of melon. The palate is treated to bright acidity with rounded flavors of citrus, melon and minerality with subtle notes or orange zest. Just a touch of lime in the finish. Buy This Wine

2012 Giordano Gavi Docg, Piedmont, Italy, $12 (S) – Rating 90

Gavi is a crisp  white wine made from the Cortese grape grown in the southeast region of Piedmont. Gavi may be my wine find of the summer. A perfectly refreshing patio sipper or for pairing with lighter summer fare. Similar to CA Sauvignon Blanc (no grapefruit flavor), this beauty opens with a nose of pineapple and citrus balanced with a little pear. The palate is treated to flavors of green apple, pineapple and hint of pear with integrated minerality. Lower alcohol at 12% is a bonus. Buy This Wine

2010 Dry Creek Vineyard Foggy Oaks Chardonnay, Russian River Valley, Sonoma County, CA, $20 (S) – Rating 90

Barrel fermented with 85% malolactic fermentation, this Chardonnay is a winner at $20. The nose is reminiscent of mom’s apple pie with warm notes of yeast and nutmeg. As it opens more tropical and citrus aromas come forward. Balanced acidity and creaminess with flavors of red apple, pear, caramel, vanilla and baking spice with subtle notes of ripe pineapple on the finish. Buy This Wine
