Texas wines have come a long way with William and Chris often leading the pack. Sangiovese does very well in the Lone Star State and this is an excellent example. An intriguing nose of smoke, cherry and chocolate is the prelude to a fruit driven wine with soft tannins and juicy food-pairing acidity. On the palate, flavors of cherry, strawberry, raspberry and campfire smoke complimented by notes of espresso on the finish. Buy This Wine

The rustic nose of cherry, leather and briar brings back thoughts of the amazing Castello di Amorosa itself. A blend of 90% estate Sangiovese and 10% Merlot. Medium-bodied with plenty of juicy acidity and firm tannins. Flavors of red cherry, dark spice and raspberry with hints of chocolate on the finish. Think summer afternoon with friends around the the BBQ and pool…this is the right wine. A nose of smokey cherry with undertones of spice and leather. Clean bright flavors of cherry and plum with a bit of raspberry with hints of espresso in the long finish. Medium bodied with moderate acidity and balanced tannins make for an excellent summer red. 2009 Chatom Vineyards “Gitano” Sangiovese, Calaveras County, CA, $16 (S) – Rating 89

Once again a delicious example of CA Sangiovese. A big nose of black cherry, ripe plum and raspberry with intriguing notes of tobacco and spice. Give this wine at least 30 minutes in the decanter for it full potential. Plenty of food pairing acidity and supple tannins with bright flavors of cherry, plum and dark spices. The wine was an excellent pairing with homemade tamales. Buy This Wine
