2007 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA, $34- Rating 92

A dark rich Cabernet that takes a while to open up…be patient. Well structured with with hints of black berry, black cherry, coffee and dark chocolate. The supple tannins are nicely integrated and soften in the glass. Mocha and vanilla highlight the finish

2008 Tres Sabores Zinfandel, Rutherford, Napa Valley, CA, $34 (S) – Rating 92

This Zinfandel was served at the 2011 Professional Wine Writers Symposium dinner, a ringing endorsement.  While Napa is known for Cabernet, Tres Sabores proves you can grow great Zinfandel, too. A very well balanced, fruit forward, medium-bodied Zin that is a bit reminiscent of a big Pinot. Interesting enough to enjoy solo, the wine paired wonderfully with homemade pulled pork. 2008 Judd’s Hill Burke’s Blazing Barbeque Old Vine Zinfandel, Mok-elumne River, Lodi, CA, $30 – Rating 90

I am usually not a big fan of Lodi Zins for their overpowering cherry cola flavors. This Judd’s Hill Zin is a wonderful exception to the rule. While the name may sound silly, this is a serious Zinfandel from 75 year old vines. Very well balanced with good Zin flavors but not too jammy or overpowering. A great food pairing Zin for our Bar-B-Que pizza.  Judd’s Hill Winery

2003 Rombauer Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA $90 – Rating 95

One of Rombauer’s small production (400 cases) single vineyard AVA Cabernets. Extremely approachable now and drinking beautifully after a short decant. This is a truly elegant, well balanced wine with a very supple and velvety tannin structure. Lot of dark fruit and berry flavors accented with a touch of toffee and hint of pepper. The wine paired very well with the roast we served. However,  it is big enough to command your attention by itself. Available only at the Rombauer Vineyards tasting room or online at Rombauer.com.

2006 Shake Ridge Vineyards, Amador County, CA (S) $32 – Rating 90

Yorba Syrah is a well made complex, lush and jammy wine. Flavors of blackberry, dark fruit, black pepper, vanilla with a hint of broken-in leather make this an excellent wine to enjoy alone or with steak or grilled lamb.
