2009 Raptor Ridge Winery – Meredith Mitchell Vineyard Pinot Noir, McMinnville, Oregon, $38 (S) – Rating 89

Garnet colored, this Pinot from Raptor Ridge offers a rich nose of cherry with leather undertones. Medium-bodied with a palate of cherry, plum and light spice. Soft to the mouth with good acidity and supple tannins but a short finish. Opens over time. All in all – pretty darn nice

2009 Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara County, CA, $44 (S) – Rating 92

A rich, intense and complex Pinot that will grab your attention. The nose is full of plum and cinnamon with notes of tobacco box. The palate is rewarded with round flavors of plum, raspberry, dark cherry, cooking spice, cinnamon, nutmeg with hints of oaky vanilla and underpinned by balanced acidity and soft tannins.

2010 Masút Vineyard and Winery Pinot Noir, Mendocino, CA, $40 (S) – Rating 92

An excellent sophomore effort from 3rd generation winemakers Ben and Jake Fetzer at Masút Vineyard. A full-on nose of rich black cherry pie with hints of espresso. Very rich and ripe on the palate with flavors of cherry, coffee, ripe strawberry, plum, notes of coca and plenty of integrated spice. Soft tannins accentuated with a touch of acidity round out this well made Pinot.

2007 Amici Cellars Pinot Noir, Mendocino, CA, $30 (S) – Rating 89

A nice nose of cherry and  plum with a bit of spice. This Pinot from Amici Cellars offers dark cherry jam flavors, ripe plum, saddle leather and spice box with medium acidity and soft tannins. Dijon #777 Pinot Noir clone adds intriguing rustic notes and earthy flavors.

2009 MacPhail Family Winery Ferrington Vineyard Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley, CA, $49 (S) – Rating 94

The lush rich Pinot Noir style that defines James MacPhail wines is showcased here with a full bouquet of cherry, raspberry and spice. On the palate, expect bold yet balanced flavors of cherry and raspberry jam with plenty of spice and notes of oaky vanilla. While rich, integrated acidity adds complexity.  Patience is rewarded as the wine blossoms in the glass.
