2003 Rombauer Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA $90 – Rating 95

One of Rombauer’s small production (400 cases) single vineyard AVA Cabernets. Extremely approachable now and drinking beautifully after a short decant. This is a truly elegant, well balanced wine with a very supple and velvety tannin structure. Lot of dark fruit and berry flavors accented with a touch of toffee and hint of pepper. The wine paired very well with the roast we served. However,  it is big enough to command your attention by itself. Available only at the Rombauer Vineyards tasting room or online at Rombauer.com.

2006 Shake Ridge Vineyards, Amador County, CA (S) $32 – Rating 90

Yorba Syrah is a well made complex, lush and jammy wine. Flavors of blackberry, dark fruit, black pepper, vanilla with a hint of broken-in leather make this an excellent wine to enjoy alone or with steak or grilled lamb.

2009 Naked Winery Oh! Zinfandel, Columbia Valley, WA, $40 (S) – Rating 90

At first I was a bit suspect of a Washington state Zinfandel, but I am now a convert. We wrote about Naked Winery and their line of “Orgasmic Wines” in our Valentine’s post Valentine’s Day Wine – Sensual or Sexy? This is a very food friendly Zin with lighter jammy flavors of dark berries and black cherry.

2007 Uppercut Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA, $22 – Rating 90

Uppercut Cabernet is more often found on steakhouse wine list (over priced) than in your local wine shop (great value price). However, we did find it recently at our local shop. At $20-$25 this is a must buy Cabernet! The alcohol is a bit hot when opened but settles down into a well balanced Cabernet after a bit of decanting. The flavors of dark berries, dark cherry, currant and spicy pepper pair wonderfully with  with a grilled steak or lamb chops.

2008 J Vineyards Chardonnay, Russian River Valley, CA, $28 (S) – Rating 92

J Vineyards Russian River Chardonnay takes a few minutes to open up but as with a beautiful flower you are rewarded with a elegantly structured food enhancing wine. A very well balanced wine with hints of Meyer lemon, tropical, floral and herbecous notes. Just enough oak and vanilla to create a luscious creamy mouth-feel.
