This week I had the opportunity to interview one of the most interesting and thought provoking winemakers around. On February 21st, Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker at Ravenswood Winery, will be inducted into the Vintners Hall of Fame in Napa Valley. There, he will take his place beside many of the great American vintners including one of Joel’s early mentors, Andre Tchelistcheff. Valentine’s Day Wine – Sensual or Sexy? Victoria’s Secret or something a bit more risqué?  Speaking on Temptation, Latin American writer Eduardo Galeano, wrote, “We are all mortal until the first kiss or second glass of wine.” Kisses and wine, a perfect combination for Valentine immortality.

There are plenty of great wines, sparkling and otherwise that would make a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift. But instead of writing about the right bubbly to set a romantic mood, this piece is about two wineries who in their very essence embrace sensuality and the sexual tease. Ok… Now we’re talking. This is what Oregon Pinot is all about. From Stoller Vineyards Estate  Senior Vines (older vines) this complex balanced Pinot Noir has a savory intensity that grabs your attention. Rich flavors of spice, dark berry, cherries and coffee with a hint pepper add to the experience. The silky and supple tannins compliment the fruit and will allow this wine to mature for years to come.

2008 Stoller JV Estate Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, OR, $20 (S) – Rating 90

From the Stoller Vineyard’s Estate junior vines (younger vines) come this excellent value Pinot Noir. This medium bodied wine is immediately approachable but has enough tannins to hold it for another couple of years. Expect buoyant flavors of red fruit, spice, raspberry and dark cherry.

2008 Stoller Estate SV Chardonnay, Dundee Hills, OR, $28 (S) – Rating 90

A really beautiful Oregon Chardonnay. Barrel fermentation creates a lush rich mouth-feel balanced with a light toast and minerality. The wine was rich with pear, red apple, honey, spice, stone fruit and vanilla cream. As rich as it sounds, the moderate acidity makes it a good food pairing Chardonnay. May I  have another glass please.
