Zinfandel

2009 Wine Guerrilla Zinfandel, Clopton Vineyard, Russian River Valley, CA, $27 (S) – Rating 91

A voluptuous and buxom Zinfandel, rich with jammy flavors of blue berries and black/red fruit. Give this Wine Guerrilla beauty a little decanter time to show her spicy depth and complexity. Supple tannins add character to subtly integrated flavors of leather, smoke and old vine nuance. Texas smoked brisket (sans sauce) and grilled veggies made for an outstanding pairing.

2006 Yorba Zinfandel, Shake Ridge Vineyards, Amador County, CA $28 (S) – Rating 90

Like a shy girl, Yorba Zinfandel is a bit tight at first pour but opens into a beautifully structured and slightly complex wine. Dark rich flavors blackberry, raspberry, dark cherry, bramble and spice are complimented by supple tannins.

2009 Paul Dolan Vineyards Zinfandel, Mendocino County, CA, $25 (S) – Rating 90

Paul Dolan’s organic vineyards create a soft medium-bodied Zin that goes down with an easy smile. Brighter than many Zinfandels, it has enough jaminess to balance the dark cherry, peppery spice and tobacco flavors highlighted with a touch of saddle leather. Serve this wine at your next back yard BBQ.

2008 Tres Sabores Zinfandel, Rutherford, Napa Valley, CA, $34 (S) – Rating 92

This Zinfandel was served at the 2011 Professional Wine Writers Symposium dinner, a ringing endorsement.  While Napa is known for Cabernet, Tres Sabores proves you can grow great Zinfandel, too. A very well balanced, fruit forward, medium-bodied Zin that is a bit reminiscent of a big Pinot. Interesting enough to enjoy solo, the wine paired wonderfully with homemade pulled pork. 2008 Judd’s Hill Burke’s Blazing Barbeque Old Vine Zinfandel, Mok-elumne River, Lodi, CA, $30 – Rating 90

I am usually not a big fan of Lodi Zins for their overpowering cherry cola flavors. This Judd’s Hill Zin is a wonderful exception to the rule. While the name may sound silly, this is a serious Zinfandel from 75 year old vines. Very well balanced with good Zin flavors but not too jammy or overpowering. A great food pairing Zin for our Bar-B-Que pizza.  Judd’s Hill Winery
